Daylight is a dynamic source of light in terms of spectrum, intensity and directivity.
However traditional electric artificial light is constant throughout the day, without regulation capacity. Beyond losing the perception of natural time, this artificial light might have a negative impact on our health and body.
Designing daylighting systems in buildings is a complex process that requires meeting all the visual comfort requirements of interior lighting.
EN-12464 regulation requires to avoid glare and high contrasts that cause eye fatigue: daylighting solutions must diffuse the light and avoid the hot-spots.
However, opal solutions avoid these hot-spots by doping the plastic with particles that scatter light randomly with a Lambertian distribution. This light gets lost in space, no longer focused towards working areas, “fixed” by enhancing skylight units.
Increasing the number of holes on the roof also increase the thermal losses and the IR radiation inside the building: only a solution with a high optic performance and a correct design can enhance the energy consumption of the building and the well-being of its occupants.
